Blackpool Council Take Over The Running of Blackpool Airport

Blackpool Council has announced it will be taking over the running of Blackpool Airport to ensure that the facility has a future as a key strategic, sustainable asset for the Fylde Coast. To do this, the Council will create a new subsidiary company, Blackpool Airport Operations Ltd, to manage the Squires Gate aviation hub.

In taking over the running, Blackpool Council have announed (08.03.2021) they will be able to exercise a greater level of control and take sound investment decisions which will ensure that opportunities for growth are maximised. The new company will work towards building a long term, sustainable future for one of England’s oldest airports, which has supported flying since1909. Blackpool’s passenger numbers peaked at 550,000 in 2007 when its route network included Amsterdam, Prague, Aberdeen, Belfast and Southhampton. Blackpool Airport has had no commercial traffic since March 2017,  but Blackpool Council are so confident in its future that they have decided to take over the management of this UK gateway.

Blackpool Council adds that Stephen Smith will remain as Airport Manager and the move will have no impact on jobs or ongoing operations.
