Kirkham Librarian Denies Charges That She Sexually Assaulted Numerous Male Inmates

A 45-year-old female prison librarian has denied accusations that she sexually assaulting male inmates at Kirkham Jail over an eight-month period. Sharon Mawdesley, of St Luke’s Road, Blackpool, denied six counts of sexual assault and three counts of misconduct in a public office when she appeared at Preston Crown Court on Tuesday 11th October. She is alleged to have molested the men at Kirkham Jail where she worked until July 2018. The alleged assaults are said to have happened over an eight-month period between 1st December 1, 2017 and 5th July, 2018. Before Mawdesley left Kirkham Jail in 2018, she was employed by Lancashire County Council’s library service in the Category D prison.

In Court, Mawdesley spoke only to confirm her name and enter not guilty pleas to the charges she faces. Judge Heather Lloyd granted unconditional bail and set a date for Mawdsley to stand trial next September. She will appear before the court again in January for a Plea and Direction Hearing and will then have a pre-trial review in July.

Mawdesley had previously appeared at the Preston Magistrates Court on 8th September and was not asked to enter a plea. The district judge granted unconditional bail at that time.
