Betfair Exchange Share The Flood Of Bets Placed The Day Before Election Announced

The number of matched bets on the date of a General Election placed on Tuesday 21st May, the day before Rishi Sunak announced the date in the Downing Street rain have led to investigations from the Gambling Commission. Betfair Exchange statistics have given rise to the featured graph. At the time of writing (Thursday 20th June) other bookmakers have yet to declare the daily betting data. However, with odds of 7/1 this has given some punters a tidy profit!

Jim Waterson from The Guardian has said, ‘Here’s what happens if you scrape Betfair data for bets on a July election. This graph cuts off at the end of 21 May, the day before Sunak announced the election. There’s a flood of bets that day – before Rishi formally told the cabinet and stood in Downing Street. Things pick up from mid-morning on 21st May, the day before the announcement. By lunchtime people are piling in and taking any odds-on July. Who gambled? Why? No idea. Betfair is unusually transparent – other bookies, who knows.’

This spike is clearly shown on the Financial Times graph below.
