Should Monday 21st June Be Declared a National Bank Holiday For Families To Get Together – Or Will This Cause Chaos?

Monday 21st June, 2021 is the first day of Summer!  It is also the day when all legal limits on social contacts will (hopefully) be removed. This is Step 4 in the plan unveiled by the Prime Minister yesterday.  Boris Johnson said that on Monday 21st June, ‘We will aim to remove all legal limits on social contact and on weddings and other life events, we will reopen everything up to and including nightclubs and enable large events such as theatre performances above the limits of step three – potentially using testing to reduce the risk of infection.’

With this news, a social media campaign has been launched earlier today to make 21st June a Bank Holiday so Britons can properly celebrate the end of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. Having already reached over 10,000 signatures, the Government will have a legal duty to respond.  The petition could be debated in Parliament if 100,000 people back the cause online.

Some have suggested the date should be a permanent holiday to celebrate the efforts of the NHS and key workers and remember lives lost. Whilst one person wrote: ‘So if the road map goes to plan why don’t we forever more make 21st June a bank holiday – to reflect each year on the dark days we all went through, to remember the ones who died of this horrible virus and to embrace our friends and family again.’
