It came as a blow to many yesterday, as it was widely expected that gyms and leisure centres would be given the green light to re-open from 4th July when Boris made his announcement. Sadly, this was not the case and it may be several more weeks before gym-goers are able to return to their training schedules.

With limited equipment at home, and having quaffed one too many gins than the waistline might appreciate during lockdown – lots are asking what the options are for instructor led workouts.

As it is now possible for groups of six people from different households to meet up outside, one local personal trainer and Powerlifting Pro Dan Casson, of Casson Strength & Fitness has been met with unprecedented demand for his outdoor circuit training classes which are £5 per session.

Dan told us, “At first I was offering online group classes, but when the rules were relaxed to allow six people to meet, we offered a couple of Saturday morning sessions and they were fully booked within the hour. So we added a few more, and these filled up quickly!

For a lot of people, they struggle to stay motivated when training at home by themselves. When they book and pay for a class, they force themselves to attend because they’ve made a commitment. As a Personal Trainer with a gym, I also have heavy weights and kit that we use in the classes that people don’t have at home – such as a tyre, a weighted sledge, and kettlebells”

Dan’s classes are held in St Annes on public grass, but he has also received enquiries for ‘private’ groups to hold lunchtime classes for five people at their place of work, and for groups of friends to book their own group classes in and around Lytham St Annes.

Are there any other gyms offering instructor led training?

Yes! YourGym of Lytham is also holding a limited (but increasing) number of outdoor classes, exclusively for members as a token of appreciation for their loyalty and support during this time, as well as a comprehensive online programme. These classes are currently held in the morning or in the evening, but the management told Lytham St Annes News that there are plans to expand the offering – as well as implementing stringent social distancing and hygiene measures, for when the Government does permit re-opening.

If online training at home is more your thing, Hello Fit in Lytham also have an extensive and varied selection of virtual classes that can be purchased on a Pay as You Go basis, at £3/5 per class and these can be booked on their website.

Working out with other people is a great way to stay healthy and active, and also socialise within the parameters of the Government guidelines – have you tried a class yet?
