Don’t Forget Census Day – next Sunday 21st March – £1,000 Fines For Non-Compliance.

Lytham St. Anne’s residents should have received an envelope bearing the words ‘Census 2021.  Your response is required by law’. Make sure that you have not mislaid and thrown this envelope away! The enclosed booklet says that all households should complete the census on Sunday March 21 or as soon as possible after. However, you can submit the completed questionnaire before 21st March if you know who will be in your household on that day.

This compulsory survey is recorded by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and will, for the first time, this year be conducted primarily online. In your envelope there is a unique code – allowing the householder to access and complete their census returns online. The target is to have 75 per cent of census returns completed online, with the remainder completed on traditional paper forms –which have to applied for by calling 0800 141 2021 or at www.census.gov.uk

The 2021 census is largely similar to the 2011 census, with questions about age, ethnicity, religion, employment and relationships. However, new questions have been included this year including sexual orientation and gender identity.

Those who fail to fulfil this legal requirement to complete the questionnaire risk being fined up to £1,000, as it is a criminal offence. It is also a criminal offence to supply incorrect information, so make sure to be accurate when filling it out.

More information on the 2021 census can be found at https://census.gov.uk/
