Elderly Shoppers Scammed In The Street

Taking newly found opportunities to fleece unsuspecting elderly shoppers, ‘fake’ Covid-19 enforcement officers have been reported as hitting the streets to confront non-mask wearing residents demanding an ‘on the spot fine’.  This has been reported as occurring in various locations in North West and North East England.

Following similar reported incidents in Fleetwood, Wyre Council has warned residents to remain vigilant of these fake enforcement officers who are demanding immediate on the spot cash payments after handing out phoney fines to those they have targeted and accused of flouting lockdown rules.

As a consequence of these fake fines, Wyre Council has advised people to only engage with police, or authorised council officers with official ID, to avoid being scammed.

‘Any authorised officer from the police, the council or District Enforcement would always carry ID with them, which you should ask to see if you are at all unsure. Also, they would never ask for on the spot cash payment.’
