Walkers on the Lytham Promenade reported seeing smoke clouds in the distance and expressed their concern. This was a consequence of a massive fire which broke out at Sankey Valley Industrial Estate in Newton-le-Willows at 11.00 a.m. today (Wednesday 20th May). The ferocious blaze sent plumes of smoke billowing across the North West region – and these could be seen from Lytham in an otherwise cloudless sky.
A spokesperson for the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said ‘A large volume of smoke is being produced by the fire. Nearby businesses and residents should keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicine nearby and call NHS 111 if ill effects occur. Our firefighters are working in extremely challenging conditions with the heat being generated from the flames.’
