Meet the People: Jane Austin “the Voice of the Fylde”

I have lived in Lytham St. Annes for most of my life except for a spell in London in my twenties, when I worked as a Legal PA in Lincoln’s Inn and then as PA to a Film Director in Hampstead.

I am a single parent to my son, age 26, who works in Hospitality, and to my daughter, age 21, who is in her final year studying for a Law degree.

The Fylde Coast is a fabulous place to live, having a micro climate all of its own, and I enjoy nothing more than walking my Mini-Dachshund, Nelly, on our beautiful beach most days. Meeting up regularly with a friend at one of the many quirky cafe/restaurants in Lytham is also something I enjoy, and I’m ready to get out on my bike again now Spring is well on the way.

I completed a Diploma in Interior Design a few years ago and was set to launch an interior styling business before the first lockdown, but obviously it wasn’t a sensible idea to do so. The only taste of radio I’d had before joining Fylde Coast Radio was when I was a guest at BBC Radio Lancashire and Radio Two in 2013, after writing and publishing a short book.

Between the first and second lockdowns, I discovered Fylde Coast Radio was looking for local presenters, so decided to audition as a radio host. After a couple of auditions with the radio station I was accepted, and have now got the radio bug! It’s a fantastic way to be involved in the local community and I’m delighted to be part of the team at Fylde Coast Radio, which is real local radio for the whole of the Fylde Coast. We are currently based at studios on Lytham Road, South Shore but will eventually be moving to premises in a prime location at Starr Gate, adjacent to the tram station.

My radio show is 12-2pm every Friday, when I play music from the 60s right across the decades to the noughties – the 80s being my favourite decade! I have a slot on wine, ‘Wine Talk’ in which I taste and review a different wine each week, live on air. I also write regular fun features on topics that are trending. I’ve featured many local businesses on my show, and if you are a local business, or have an event or message you would like to be heard, feel free to contact me at janeaustinradio@gmail.com
