As the end of the festive activities begin to conclude, the removal of decorations begins.

But, when is the appropriate time to take down these decorations?

Well, according to tradition, everything must be removed before the 12th day of Christmas –  Sunday 5th January. Leaving the task until next week could result in bad luck!

It is traditionally considered bad luck because in the past it was believed that spirits lived in the holly and ivy, a common decoration. Once Christmas was over, the spirits needed to be released otherwise vegetation would not grow leading to agricultural problems.

While the ivy has been mostly replaced with tinsel and baubles, the superstition remains to this day.
