Promenade Pool’s Brilliant Bounce Back
There’s good news for families and visitors across Lytham St Annes – the St. Anne’s much-loved historic paddling pool is set to make a big comeback in 2027 after councillors approved vital repairs to secure its future.
The famous free attraction in Promenade Gardens, which has been delighting generations of children for more than 110 years, was forced to close this summer after cracks appeared in the surface.
But investigations revealed the problem was much more serious than first thought.
Water had seeped beneath the historic pool over many decades, weakening the foundations and creating a potential safety risk. Rather than opting for a temporary patch-up job, Fylde Council has backed a permanent solution designed to keep the paddling pool open for many years to come.
The Council’s Executive Committee has now approved £86,284 to fund the specialist repair work.
Contractors will completely rebuild the damaged base before giving the pool a fresh coat of its traditional blue paint. The work also comes with a 10-year warranty, providing confidence that the repairs will stand the test of time.
Councillor Jayne Nixon, Fylde Council’s Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Culture, said: “This paddling pool has been bringing joy to St Annes families for well over a century, so it was vital we got this repair right rather than rushing a quick fix that wouldn’t last.
“I’d like to thank our officers and contractors for their hard work getting to the bottom of a genuinely tricky problem, and I’m really looking forward to seeing children splashing about here again.”
The pool will remain closed throughout the winter while the final stages of the repair are completed and fully tested before reopening in time for the 2027 summer season.
The investment will help safeguard one of St Annes’ best-loved seaside attractions, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy a tradition that dates back to 1912, when the pool was originally built as a boating pool beside the iconic Grade II listed bandstand.
While families will have to wait until next year for the first splash, the countdown is now on for the return of one of the Fylde coast’s favourite summer attractions.
