Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss will become the UKs next Prime Minister after Penny Mordaunt was knocked out of contest this afternoon.

Sunak gained 137 votes (adding 19 votes), Liz Truss scored 113 (adding 27 votes) whilst Penny Mordaunt narrowly trailed on 105 (adding 13 votes).

The remaining two candidates will face a summer of campaigning and hustings before a vote by the wider party membership. A winner is expected to be announced on 5 September. They will face each other live at 9.00 p.m. on BBC1 Monday 25th July.

However, a YouGov poll suggests that Mr Sunak will struggle to win over the Tory membership irrespective of which of the remaining candidates won the MPs vote.
