A much-loved Lytham restaurant could be forced to close this summer…as Spago is facing a £40,000 legal battle over its outdoor canopy.
Spago, located on Dicconson Terrace, has become a well-known fixture in Lytahm’s vibrant dining scene. But now the business is under threat after a planning dispute over its outdoor canopy sparked a legal challenge from local pressure group Lytham Voice.
The group argues the structure could impact the character of the town centre, including its listed buildings and conservation area. However, Spago owner Tony Vavoso says the canopy was already properly approved by Fylde Council, and fears the consequences of defending that decision could be devastating.
“The honest truth is that, if this situation continues, this could be our last summer at Spagó,” he said.
In response, a wave of local support has emerged, with residents rallying behind the restaurant. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Mike Senior, aiming to raise £40,000 to help cover mounting legal costs.
Describing the situation as a “massive blow” to a much-loved local business, Mr Senior said Spago plays a vital role in the community—employing local people, attracting visitors, and contributing to the town’s economy.
“At a time when hospitality is already under pressure, this is the last thing a business like this needs,” he said. “Lytham has a proud heritage, but it also needs to support thriving modern businesses.”
At the time of writing, donations were £795, reflecting growing public backing. Many residents have taken to social media to voice their support, highlighting the restaurant’s importance to the town’s social and economic life.
Mr Vavoso has expressed heartfelt thanks to the community, but warned of the serious financial risks ahead. “Defending my business could cost £40,000 or more, and there’s no guarantee of success,” he said. “If I’m forced to remove the canopy, the long-term impact on Spago would be devastating.”
The Gofund me message at https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-the-spago-canopy reads: “A wonderful business Spagó is facing a ridiculous legal battle to keep their outdoor canopy open for business. A thriving business at the heart of our community, this is a massive kick for Tony and his team at a time hospitality is already struggling so much. Without the funds to fight this, the business could go under without that area.
“As a community and out of principle, let’s help Spagó fight this and keep their canopy open. A tremendous business who hires locally, provides incredible service and brings much needed business to our local economy. Lytham has a wonderful heritage. But it is also the 21st century! Please donate anything you can.
“Please note: if legal fees aren’t required, or we struggle to reach any significant funds raised, all donations will be refunded.”
