Blackpool Illuminations Remain Unlit Tonight Prior To Special Red White & Blue Tower Tribute

The Blackpool Illuminations will remain unlit tonight (Friday 9th September), as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Organisers said they were greatly saddened by the monarch’s death and the lights were turned off on Thursday (8th September) out of respect. The Illuminations will not be lit tonight and instead Blackpool Tower will be illuminated in red, white and blue in tribute throughout the period of mourning.

VisitBlackpool have announced that the full display will resume tomorrow night (Saturday 10th September) while on the night of the funeral the Illuminations will once again remain unlit. The display will then resume in full the following day.

A Blackpool Council spokesperson said: ‘As a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Blackpool Illuminations display will not be lit tonight (Friday 9th September). Instead, The Blackpool Tower will be illuminated in red, white and blue in tribute to a monarch who has served our country with the utmost strength, dignity and kindness.

The full display will resume tomorrow night, Saturday 10th September. The Blackpool Tower will be illuminated in red, white and blue throughout the period of mourning. On the night of the actual funeral (date to be confirmed), the Illuminations will once again remain unlit.

The display will then resume in full the following day. We have also decided to postpone the first round of the World Fireworks Championship Blackpool on the night of Saturday 17 September because of the proximity to the State funeral. It will be rescheduled to October half-term. This means the revised dates for the four firework events are: Saturday 1 October, Saturday 15 October, Thursday 27 October, and Friday 28 October.’
