The political insider and respected journalist, Michael Crick, has shared the news that the Blackpool South constituency’s Labour party have narrowed their long list of four candidates down to two candidates. He writes: ‘The Labour shortlist seems to be just two names: Sarah Smith & Chris Webb.’

Following the last election on 12th December 2019, Blackpool South is currently held by the Conservative Party, with sitting MP Scott Benton gaining 16,247 votes and having a majority of 3,690 with a constituency turnout of 56.8%. The then Labour candidate, Gordon Marsden, polled 12,557 votes.
The official party selection process is underway and is expected to formally conclude by March 18 following a vote by local Labour members. Blackpool South is a prime target seat for Labour in the next General Election.

Two excellent candidates. Both with a strong ‘hands-on’ work ethic and involvement in local charities. Chris is very personable with valuable experience and has strong Union backing but I believe Sarah has a more dynamic approach focusing on the main priorities in the Blackpool South constituency of housing, education and the environment. She’s a breath of fresh air and wants to ‘rewrite the headlines for Blackpool’. I believe she can and gets my vote. Either candidate would be a huge improvement on the divisiveness and cheap populism of Benton.
