Blackpool South MP Condemns Racist Rumours Following Arrest of Teen Over Homemade Explosives

Chris Webb (pictured) has spoken out strongly today (1st January 2026) following the arrest of a 16-year-old in connection with homemade explosive devices in Blackpool, condemning what he described as racist rumours spreading online in the aftermath of the incident.

In a statement posted on social media, the Blackpool South MP said he was aware of false claims circulating in comment sections and elsewhere, and moved to address them directly.

“To be absolutely clear,” Mr Webb stated, “the person in question was not an asylum seeker and not an illegal immigrant.”

He added that the rumours were being deliberately pushed by individuals seeking to stir up hatred and division within the town, stressing that such behaviour does not reflect the values of the local community and would not succeed.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday, led to the arrest of a teenager after police discovered suspected homemade explosive materials at a residential property. Emergency services attended the scene, nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, and residents were later allowed to return once the area was declared safe.

Mr Webb also highlighted that only limited information can be released at this stage due to the individual being under the age of 18, a point he said many residents would understand.

Lancashire Police have not released further details while enquiries continue, and have urged the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unverified claims online.

Authorities continue to reassure residents that public safety remains their priority as the investigation progresses.
